Corrosion, surface deterioration, small leaks, and recurring buildup can affect older drain and sewer pipes even when the line has not completely collapsed. Internal pipe coating provides a rehabilitation option for qualifying pipes by applying a protective material to the prepared interior surface.

Zippity Split provides professional pipe coating throughout Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale, Mesa, and nearby Valley communities. We inspect the line, prepare the existing pipe, apply the coating system, and verify the completed work without automatically replacing the entire pipeline.

What Is Internal Pipe Coating?

Internal pipe coating is a trenchless rehabilitation process that creates a protective layer along the inside of an existing drain or sewer pipe. The coating covers the prepared interior surface, helping seal minor defects, reduce exposure to continued corrosion, and create a smoother path for wastewater.

Unlike conventional pipe replacement, coating uses the existing pipeline as the host structure. The pipe must therefore remain continuous and structurally stable enough to support the new interior layer.

Pipe coating may be considered for qualifying lines affected by:

  • Interior corrosion
  • Surface deterioration
  • Small pinhole leaks
  • Rough pipe walls
  • Minor cracks or joint defects
  • Recurring buildup caused by an uneven interior
  • Aging cast iron drainage piping

A sewer camera inspection is used to determine whether coating is appropriate or whether the line requires another type of sewer repair.

Signs a Pipe May Need Coating

Pipe deterioration often develops gradually. Early symptoms may resemble ordinary drainage problems, while more advanced damage can lead to leaks, recurring backups, or visible corrosion.

A pipe coating evaluation may be appropriate when you notice:

  • Frequent clogs in the same section of pipe
  • Slow drainage that returns after cleaning
  • Camera footage showing corrosion or surface deterioration
  • Rust flakes or loose pipe material
  • Minor leaks from an aging drain line
  • Rough interior surfaces that repeatedly catch waste
  • Small cracks, holes, or weakened joints
  • Cast iron piping that remains intact but is beginning to deteriorate

These symptoms do not automatically mean coating is the correct solution. The line must be cleaned and inspected to determine how much usable pipe remains.

How Pipe Coating Works

Successful pipe coating depends on careful preparation. Coating should not be applied over grease, loose corrosion, mineral buildup, or debris because those materials can interfere with the bond between the coating and the host pipe.

1. Inspect the Existing Pipe

We begin with a camera inspection to identify the pipe material, diameter, access points, corrosion, cracks, joints, and other visible defects.

The inspection also helps determine whether the line remains structurally suitable for coating. Pipes with major collapse, severe deformation, large missing sections, or significant offsets may require another repair method.

2. Clean and Prepare the Interior

The inside of the pipe must be cleaned thoroughly before coating begins. Depending on the condition of the line, preparation may include pipe descaling, mechanical cleaning, or hydro jetting.

This stage removes corrosion, hardened scale, grease, sludge, and loose material. It also exposes the true condition of the host pipe so previously hidden defects can be evaluated.

3. Dry and Reinspect the Line

After cleaning, the pipe is prepared according to the requirements of the coating system. The interior must be sufficiently clean and dry for the coating material to adhere properly.

We reinspect the prepared line before application to confirm that it is ready and that coating remains an appropriate option.

4. Apply the Internal Coating

The coating material is distributed along the interior pipe walls to create a continuous protective layer. The application method depends on the pipe size, configuration, condition, and coating system being used.

The objective is to create an even interior surface without unnecessary excavation or removal of the existing pipe.

5. Allow the Coating to Cure

The coating must cure before the drain or sewer line is returned to normal service. Cure time depends on the material, pipe conditions, and application requirements.

The system should not be used until the coating has developed the strength required for service.

6. Verify the Completed Work

After curing, we perform a final inspection of accessible portions of the coated line. This allows us to check the coverage, confirm that the pipe is open, and evaluate the completed interior surface.

We then explain the results and any future service considerations.

Pipe Coating and Pipe Descaling

Pipe coating and pipe descaling are related services, but they accomplish different things.

Pipe descaling removes hardened rust, corrosion, mineral buildup, and debris from inside the pipe. It is primarily a cleaning and preparation service.

Pipe coating applies a protective material after the line has been cleaned and prepared. The coating is intended to cover and protect the remaining host-pipe surface.

Some pipes only need descaling to improve drainage. Others may benefit from descaling followed by coating when the line remains structurally usable but shows continued interior deterioration.

Pipe Coating vs. Trenchless Pipe Lining

Both coating and trenchless pipe lining rehabilitate existing pipes without conventional full-length excavation, but they do not create the same result.

Pipe coating applies a protective layer directly to the interior surface of the host pipe. It may be appropriate for surface corrosion, small defects, pinhole leaks, and general interior deterioration.

Pipe lining installs a separate liner inside the existing pipe. Once cured, the liner forms a new pipe within the old one and may provide greater structural reinforcement.

The better option depends on:

  • The severity of the damage
  • The remaining strength of the host pipe
  • Pipe diameter and configuration
  • Access to the affected section
  • The location and size of cracks or holes
  • Whether structural reinforcement is needed
  • The type of wastewater carried by the line

We use inspection findings to determine whether coating, lining, or another repair is appropriate.

When Pipe Coating Is an Appropriate Option

Pipe coating may be recommended when the existing line remains structurally intact but has interior wear that should be sealed or protected.

A qualifying pipe may have:

  • Surface corrosion
  • Rough or deteriorated interior walls
  • Minor cracks or pinhole defects
  • Small joint imperfections
  • Enough remaining wall structure to support coating
  • Continuous access through the affected section
  • A shape and diameter suitable for coating equipment
  • No major collapse or severe deformation

Coating is not selected based on pipe age alone. The actual condition of the line determines whether the service can provide a reliable result.

When Pipe Coating Is Not Enough

Pipe coating cannot rebuild a pipe that no longer has adequate structural support. It also cannot correct every alignment, grading, or access problem.

Another repair may be needed when the line has:

  • A complete or partial collapse
  • Large holes or missing pipe sections
  • Severe wall loss
  • Major separation between pipe sections
  • Significant offsets at the joints
  • A pronounced belly or sag
  • Extensive deformation
  • Heavy root intrusion through major openings
  • Insufficient access for cleaning and coating
  • Damage that requires structural replacement

Depending on the condition, options may include trenchless pipe lining, pipe bursting, sectional excavation, or conventional sewer replacement.

Benefits of Internal Pipe Coating

When the existing pipe qualifies, internal coating can rehabilitate the line while limiting disruption to the property.

Potential benefits include:

  • Protecting the remaining host-pipe surface
  • Sealing qualifying minor defects
  • Reducing exposure to continued interior corrosion
  • Creating a smoother wastewater path
  • Limiting areas where waste can collect
  • Extending the useful service life of the existing pipe
  • Avoiding unnecessary full-length excavation
  • Preserving flooring, landscaping, or finished areas when possible
  • Supporting rehabilitation of difficult-to-access piping

The results depend on the condition of the host pipe and the quality of the preparation. A line that is not properly cleaned or is too structurally damaged should not be treated as a coating candidate.

Pipe Coating for Phoenix-Area Properties

Many Phoenix-area properties contain aging cast iron drain and sewer piping. Years of corrosion, mineral accumulation, grease, and wastewater exposure can leave these pipes rough, restricted, and increasingly vulnerable to leaks.

Internal pipe coating may provide an alternative to complete replacement when the pipe remains stable enough for rehabilitation. It can be particularly useful when the affected line runs beneath a slab, finished floor, driveway, landscaping, or another area where conventional excavation would cause significant disruption.

Zippity Split provides pipe coating in Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Peoria, Ahwatukee, and surrounding Valley communities.

Why Choose Zippity Split for Pipe Coating?

Pipe coating requires more than applying material inside an old pipe. The line must be inspected, cleaned correctly, prepared for adhesion, coated evenly, and evaluated after curing.

Homeowners and businesses choose Zippity Split for:

  • Camera inspection before rehabilitation
  • Thorough pipe cleaning and preparation
  • Descaling when hardened corrosion must be removed
  • Coating recommendations based on actual pipe condition
  • Minimal-disruption repair options
  • Final camera verification
  • Clear explanations of coating, lining, and replacement options
  • Experience with aging cast iron drain and sewer systems
  • Service throughout Phoenix and nearby Valley communities

We explain what the inspection reveals and recommend coating only when the existing pipe can support the process.

I hired Zippity Split to help me unclog a very clogged kitchen sink. The experience was everything you hope a service experience like this will be; they gave a two hour time window and arrived at the very start of the window, you receive a text when they are on the way and can track arrival in real time, the technician (Brett) was very knowledgeable and personable and completed the task quickly (but not at the expense of quality workmanship). He also gave me some helpful tips for the future and recommended some additional work that should be taken care of in the future, but was not at all pushy about it. It never felt like a sales pitch and I never felt like I was being taken advantage of during a time of misfortune (which is the norm with home repairs). Brett presented the best and worst case scenarios from the beginning and kept me informed along the way. I really took a risk in hiring a company without a recommendation from someone I know personally and I'm so glad that I did! The only negative I can share, if I had to be nitpicky, is that I asked for a quote for the other recommended repairs and haven't received it yet.

I have had to call on Zippity Split again for a problem with front yard hose bib which needed to be replaced and pressure valve added. They have done other plumbing issues in the past…fixed front main water valve, leak in main water line to house and most recently clogged toilet and laundry/kitchen drain. The guys that have come out have been great! Very professional and let you know what they need to do and why. Clean up afterwards and explain what they did. Definitely a 5 star company. Don’t hesitate to contact them, you won’t be disappointed.

An elderly member of our church had a pipe leaking from under his home, in a very small crawl space. Luckily, he managed to shut the water off quickly, but when he called his normal plumber (under extended contract) they told him it would be over a week before they could respond. He was stuck with no water in Phoenix summer temps, and his plumber was no help. Our church member, frustrated, called several of us for help. I knew Zippity Split from using them previously, so I called. James was there in about 30 minutes, found the leak, and said one of his co-workers, Sam, would be out to repair it soon. Sam showed up one hour earlier than projected, and had the repair in place with a 2-year warranty, for exactly James' quoted price. The water was back on in time for an early dinner. This was not an "easy" repair. The crawl space James and Sam worked in was about 2-3' high and had pipes that looked like spaghetti everywhere. The outside temperature was around 109 deg. From their customer service desk, to the techs--five stars are not enough! This is hands down, the best plumbing and A/C company I've ever known, and I've lived all over the country in the military. The only problem is because some of us in our church agreed to pay our dear member's bill, I could not figure out how to get this post under my own name, and not our church secretary's name. There is a reason Zippity Split has over 830 five stars, and nothing less. Need I say more?

Excellent, job extremely well done by Jesus and Levi, and Jeremy for walking through the process. I would use them over and over again. Very professional, the kind you dont see very much of these days. I had my cast iron sewer pipe lined with the trenchless sleeve, the peace of mind is worth it. Any house over 50 years old needs to seriously consider this investment.

My 1948 house had one last stretch (about 25') of original cast iron pipe from our kitchen drain that hadn't been replaced. Austin and Levi did the trenchless pipe relining to avoid digging up our tile and hardwood floor. They were very professional, knowledgeable, and kept things as clean as possible considering the pipe access was in a block wall. They were kind to explain each step of the process as they went even though I felt like I asked too many questions! We were very pleased with the end result - it's a huge relief that we don't have to worry about it possibly failing anymore plus the 25 year warranty. Would definitely recommend Zippity Split for this service. Exceptionally good price compared to other quotes. Thank you!

They did a good job of getting my problem fixed. Because I hit the main water source with my motorhome I had to shut off all the water to the house. They got us back up in a few hours. There service people were very friendly and did a great job.
